Frontier

2024

What happens when one removes the small milk carton from the meeting room, enlarges it approximately 25 times, and produces it in stainless steel? With the work Frontier, this is precisely the question Oskar Kaliander allows to materialise. Through this striking intervention in the landscape, the milk cartons are transformed in both scale and expression, evoking associations with other significant landscape interventions. The once-familiar objects now take on the appearance of coastal defence structures or anti-tank obstacles – the so-called “dragon’s teeth.” Frontier is, at its core, a materialisation of overlapping meanings and expressions, reminding us of the inextricable interconnections between agriculture, war, politics, and climate catastrophe in an era marked by conflict, genocide, and environmental collapse. These conditions call for both urgent action and a nuanced understanding of the complex consequences facing children, adults, and the planet alike.
